Interesting article on what the Premier League would look like without VAR.

Spoiler - Wolves have been hurt most by VAR, as overturns have resulted with us losing out on four points

Given how well Leicester have done, and our more up and down start, I wonder what difference three points on the first day would have made. To be fair though, as much as I loathe VAR, that was more to do with the daft changes to the handball rule.

No one can ever say how a game would change though if a goal was awarded.

So Wolves take the lead at Leicester... do Leicester then throw everything at us in attack and score anyway? And with the momentum of an equaliser do they go on to win eventually?

Definitely. And with many of the offsides calls, refs have let some of them play on knowing that VAR will look at it. Whereas in years past, they might have called offsides to begin with.

Just an interesting thought exercise. I think the Prem would have better buy-in to the VAR if there were more explanations of the reasoning of the call so fans and clubs can understand why a call was or was not overturned.

Many have been complaining about VAR, but I think it's implementation in the Prem has been much better than it was at the men's and women's World Cup.

It grates that we had the one disallowed v Leicester and the offside by a foot when Southampton had already kicked off.

However, what grates even more were these decisions:

Sigurdsson being offside before he passed the ball for Everton's second goal
The last minute foul by Toon for shirt pulling on Doc and pulling him to the ground in the last minute
The Arsenal foul throw which led to their goal 2 passes later

VAR should have picked all of those incidents up and awarded decisions in our favour.

I think they should limit what calls should be able to be overturned by VAR. Despite human error, I think offsides calls were damn near correct almost every single time. And the ones that weren't, you could chalk up to the line judge being a human being. The reason for the offside rule is so that attackers do not have an advantage and do not cherrypick. It is not meant to be judged by the millimeter IMO. A player gains no advantage by being a sliver of a hair offside. And they've decided to try and judge that literally with VAR, despite it also being near impossible to tell when the ball is actually touched by the passer.

"Clear and obvious" they said, MW. All they've succeeded in doing is to muddy waters.
