Why is it you can have patio door and windows open with this weather and if a fly comes in, it can't find its way out....yet, when cycling along at 20mph and trying to fill your lungs, they can not only fly past your lips and teeth, but also hit you squarely in the back of your throat rendering it impossible to either cough up or swallow...

And when that fly hits the back of your throat, tiny particles of cow and dog shit are despersed, in said throat.

Fruit flies down our garden, are a bastard, but like to chew my legs, causing them to react, itch and swell up.

All of my windows and doors have Mosquito nets on them during the flying insect season albeit, the odd one or two get in, but I always have a collection of cheap plastic swatters lying around and like a Mountie, I always get my Fly.

Outside is a different kettle of fish, my ankles and legs are covered in red blotches where I have been bitten by some small irritating flies especially around my ankles. You cannot win unless using some repellent as if I stand in the full sun, the flies get me, if I move into the shade, the Mosquitoes get me.

I have just invested in a fogging/misting system that will be mounted around the Pergola. The theory is that not only does this burst of fine mist spray cool the ambient temperature as much as 5-10 degrees Celsius, but also wets the wings of flying insects making them inoperable - we shall see.

Then of course, there are the Wasps nests, they will make their small honeycomb nests anywhere given the chance - just had to 'hoy' one out of the greenhouse where they had attached themselves to a small pot. Later will come the fookin Horse Flies and they're like Rambo with wings sticking spears into their victims. I've seen some folk hospitalised after being bitten/stung by the latter. What purpose they serve - not much of a fooking idea - none of them appear to eat the bucket of dog shite I need to remove from the garden every couple of days, but some type of dung beetle seems to home themselves under it.

Even with all of the Mosquito nets, there is still some tiny flying insect that gets through. They don't appear to bite, but I see them doing Kamikaze trips into the reading lamp or a candle if I'm burning one. Nearly forgot, soon will have to remember to switch off any porch lights before going into the yard as the house will fill with Moths.

I was swimming in a lake in Moscow Region one year, well, I say swimming I was floating on my back with only part of my face exposed to the air and this Barsteward Horse Fly bit my on my eyebrow - it was like someone had stuck a dart into me. As I reached the shore and stood there dripping wet they started to attack like fookin Stuka Bombers and I had to make a run for the car to escape the nasty gits.

I guess they must have seen the bulge in my trunks and had me marked down as a Horse.
