Costa's performance last night was embarrassing. He just takes the soft option of falling to the floor every time, and that in a game where the ref showed he wasn't interesting in using the whistle unless absolutely necessary.

On top of that he persistently positioned himself out of harm's way whenever we had a chance of a break.

I felt sorry for Jimenez, he battled all game long, won the ball many times, held off several players and then the support from Costa was zero.

Traore is as ineffective in many ways but at least he actually takes the game to the opposition and is willing to run at them and dribble past players. Costa lost his fearless dribbling ability with that ankle injury in Lambert's season, he has never been half the player since.

Costa has an ability to control the ball which I have rarely seen before. I have to agree, however, that he is playing with fear and does seem to be taking the easy option most of the time. Such a waste of his talent.

On the basis its creating and finishing that is the most significant problem ( defence and midfield easier to fix in my view) we should play the front three which constitutes the biggest threat. I think it is Jiminez for his hold the ball up and assist attributes Traore who does look dangerous a lot of the time and Cav who has at least scored this season with Jota as his replacement after 60. Costa does what Traore does but without the pace or the end product. I agree Traore does lose the ball a bit and could do better but I think he needs a run in the team to build his own confidence and a partnership with Jiminez. He did put in a couple of good crosses into Jiminez after beating players to get into good positions. He has to be played wide though- he just runs into traffic down the middle which blunts his threat.

In last post I was thinking of the crosses in the Huddersfield game including the one cleared off the line.

I've seen a Premier League stat somewhere.

We're 4th for chances created.
5th for shots.
17th for chances converted.

Says it all.

Good find and food for thought, our Warn. It highlights what we've said all along...that we're yielding the midfield and the gap needs to be filled by a No 10 imo eg MGW.

The problem with the midfield has been that the two inside forwards/ wide players lose the ball too easily when they drop alongside the CMs as the 3-4-3 morphs to a 5-4-1.

MGW didn't play as a 10 tonight.
He played where Raul plays but unlike Raul who pushes up on the CBs, MGW played deeper as a shadow striker.

When defending with a 5-4-1 Jota and Raul dropped alongside the two CMs.

When he went off Raul took his place in the centre and Costa went on the right.

We still played 3-4-3 but with a tweak.

Couldn't have gone better could it. The way the match panned out, how different individuals performed their roles.

And then the fans went home happy.
