Rank second half performance due to Wolves being far to slow in midfield finding themselves outran and out played.
and if your slow you have to remain compact which Wolves also failed to do.

Saiss had a shocker, far to slow, frequently out of position, gave away needless free kicks.

Tactically all over the shop second half.

Lucky boys.

He won 11 headers and prevented a goal at the death.

One can speak of luck in the 2nd half but football is a 90+ minute contest and Bristol's first 45 minutes were absolutely hapless.

I have no idea what plan Johnson was trying to execute, but anyone who has watched a single Wolves match with their eyes open knows our tactic of the crossfield ball to Doherty who will then make inroads directly into the area. Bristol allowed him to run riot without anyone getting close to him all first half.

During this period Wolves sliced them apart numerous times - Doherty hit the post, Dendoncker went through and hit a decent shot that was just a little short of finding the corner, Cav indeed scored from a free shot in the middle of the box after Doh pulled them apart again.

Against a more ruthless side, Bristol are already buried at the break.

Second half they were more on it, as they were never going to be so meek after a HT dressing down, but Wolves were content to soak up pressure.

Even then, the nearest moments for further goals were all Wolves' chances: MGW with a clear one-on-one spurned, excellent Moutinho FK off the bar, almost Jimenez through for a one-on-one before their defender wiped him out, which would often have brought red from many refs. And this was without our first choice attack and main midfielder after all.

Of course when a side puts almost its entire 11 men in the area and pumps the ball into that area repeatedly it will be nervous because you only need that one deflection in such a crowded scene for danger to emerge, but in terms of guile, they had very little.

I expected more from them to be honest in open play: some clever runs or the unexpected pass here and there. Frankly, it would all a bit muck and nettles but (thankfully) minus the brute-ishness of many a Championship side so it gives the impression of them being a "cultured" side.

Nuno is the man BUT..... Why didn't we leave Traore in/ around the centre circle when they had so many corners at the end ? They would have needed to either leave a couple of players on him or at the very least kept their keeper in their goal. Any of our players would have had the option of hoofing it anywhere upfield for him to chase as a let out as well. :smt017 :smt017 :smt017

Agree. Have never understood this. ALWAYS leave AT LEAST one man, if not two, on halfway line. They have to leave 3 back, so there are FIVE less people cluttering the goalmouth. It gives the keeper a half decent chance of getting to the cross!

In normal circumstances I would agree but this was the last couple of minutes of a score or bust position and goal difference didn't matter so as Bristol City manager I would have still taken the risk of sending everyone up anyway and there would be less defenders in the way.

I agree even though it was the last couple of minutes of a cup tie. Leaving him there alone would have been sufficient to possibly seal it but as it happened we didn't manage to hoof it and they didn't manage to score.
