So my car insurance is due for renewal on 25th March, my payment date is 26th of every month. However, to my shock, after paying my standard payment on 26th Feb, I found I was billed again today, 11th March. I phoned them up, they said it's because my next actual payment date is after the renewal date. They hadn't warned me about this, or got my prior permission to take any money out of my account on any day other than my agreed payment date. I'm waiting a response from a manager there regarding crediting my account. What are my rights here?

The Bank Direct Debit guarantee scheme says that you must be refunded an amount if it is taken without authority. As this was taken early and you were not given notice you should inform your bank and they should immediately reverse the direct debit and credit your account. Obviously you will need to make sure that you make a payment in time to give you continuous insurance cover.

Most likely it will be in the small print, if it's a card payment you made firstly, they will go for the recurring card payment which can only be stopped by contacting them or ordering a replacement card.
