Any tips for this? My lower back is very painful, been getting worse for a year or so but now really affecting my life. Driving is a nightmare, can't put my socks on some mornings, lying down can be painful, standing is usually ok. My hamstrings are banjo tight. Very bad in the morning but improves during the day as I walk about.

I've had all the checks, bloods, finger up the arse etc, all clear. Been to physio and they suspect bulging discs. Had acupuncture which did help a little. Next step was to go to docs to maybe get MRI scan to confirm the disc problem? Or do I just keep shelling out for the physio / acupuncture and hope it improves?

Its always about correct diagnosis

If you can swim do so, even limited exercise can help with many of these problems.

Dont be fobbed off by anyone though, persevere when any doctor doesn't give you full explanations its your health, ask the questions.
If you think they aren't listening, ask them LOUDER.

Write your questions, problems down, it helps during discussion.

Are you overweight?

Have you any history of lower back injuries?

A simple X-Ray could show lower spine trauma as my Chiropractor discovered - it can be as daft as falling down on your ass when you're still in nappies, but shows its discontent when you become an adult.

It is unfortunately not possible to diagnose over the internet as it could be muscular, bones, nerves or even a hip out of alignment. I have suffered with my hips being out of alignment, one leg being a fraction longer than the other and the Chiropractor was able to see it from the wear on the heels of my shoes and suffered from Sciatica where I couldn't walk for more than a few metres without being in agonising pain. I know what caused it in the Military, but I didn't know what exactly was the problem or how to fix it. One thing I do recall and that is that Recaro type seats in cars fooked my back something horrible as did sitting on aircraft seats. Cushions placed behind the back, getting the knees lower than the 90 degree sitting angle helped ME.

My advice is to seek out a TRUSTED Chiropractor as there are many that are pure charlatans and can cause more damage than good. The NHS have their equivalent, but I can't remember what they are called, but the one I went too gave good advice which included a lot of lower back strengthening exercises. My back can still go out at the blink of an eye and I no longer have my magician back doctor who is in Moscow so I have to suffer it until it rights itself, but it does get me a great sympathy vote, loads of massage the only downside is that I walk like an old gay bloke that has been gang banged by a fraternity of Hells Angels. :(

Mate, it's a shame that it's your discs that are bulging, but take Moscow's advice, and get some Thai Ladyboy to walk up and down your back in stilettos.

You've never told me about this, and I've never seen you walking around like you're touching cloth, but get down the Docs and demand an appointment for a scan, NOW. In the meantime, it's a bead cover for the car seat, some deepheat, and lot's of alcohol.

Take it easy kidda, and I'll see you soon x

Yep, get a chiropractor....
My mum had similar symptoms to you....4 sessions with the chiro and she was almost back to normal.
Mind you, at 37 quid a go for 15 minutes, it might be cheaper to fly to Thailand and get some extras...

If I get some sort of ailment, I'm going to inform The Wench that Thailand is the best place to get it cured.

Do what I do mate.

Whack some ibuprofen gel on it and grit your teeth till it takes effect.

Seriously though, better to get it checked out by the professionals, than risk further damage.

Hope you feel better soon.

However, once your skeletal system is in line, you will need to build up the muscles around your "core" to keep it that way.

Integrated approach needed, Chiropractic care in isolation, will not do the trick. If there is a reasonable Pilates class in your area, sign yourself up.

Wasn't it Yoga that kept Ryan Giggs going for so long? My Joe does Taekwondo, and his Instructors, a married couple, make me feel like a right slob, when I see them limber up or demonstrate. If I tried anything like what they can do, I'd end up with a ruptured groin and a torn hamstring.

I have been suffering a pain in my left leg for over 3 months now. I had thought it was a bit of arthritis due to the winter and moist air of Burgas where I have spent a lot more time than in my village location due to the demands of this apartment renovation.

Chiropractors don't exist in this part of the world and they are Manual Therapists here. After a few massage sessions which gave some temporary relief and I don't mean Happy Endings, I came across this Russian Doctor who specialises in Manual Therapy. He made his physical examination and decreed that my Cartilage was the main cause of my pain, was swollen and that some remedial therapy work ought to be addressed on my spine.

I have never EVER experienced such a painful and uncomfortable procedure that I undertook with this Russian. He used something like a croquet needle and pushed into my nerves until I thought it would penetrate the skin. I began to understand how Jesus might have felt when they nailed him up.

I was basically told to follow the PRICE method of self-treatment with P being Protection, R being Rest, I being Ice, C being Compression and E being Elevation.

The course of treatment did appear to help, but not cure and towards the end, the leg got more painful than when I first went for treatment. In the end, I went to my GP who immediately sent me off for an X-Ray of my spine and knee cap, her diagnosis prior to the X-Ray that the problem was most probably coming from my spine as I was complaining of shooting and constant pain you would get from the likes of Sciatica and/or a trapped nerve.

Couple of hours later, I have my X-Ray results on disc and go back to the GP, yes there is wear and tear on my knee which is only to be expected at my age, but the pictures show 'degeneration of the spine'. It don't mean much to me where is she is pointing at this bit of vertebrae or the other, but she said that is where the pain is emanating from and that I should take a 10 day course of anti-inflammatory tablets followed by twice yearly therapy in the Military Hospital.

I only took one tablet the same evening and low and behold, by the morning the pain had GONE completely. Here was me suffering this pain for months and not getting around to see my Doctor when I really ought to have made the effort. I was already writing myself off for a knee cap cartilage replacement or something similar and all I needed was a bloody X-Ray!! My Travolta days ain't completely over just yet.

So, back pain that cannot be attributed to anything Muscular, get down your Surgery and demand an X-Ray and if that don't show the problem get back down there and push for a MRI scan.

You can have a Left Back a Centre Back or a Right Awful Back - the choice is yours.

I think I have been all of those things in my time. Seriously though, I did have some severe back pain a few years ago and an X Ray showed a prolapsed disc some degeneration of c4 and c5 (discs). I was advised to lose weight amongst other things and I lost about a stone and haven't suffered from it recently (I hope saying that isn't asking for trouble).
