I hated them too until I plucked up the courage to hold a tarantula the other week, it was harmless.

It just tickled as it crawled up my arm.

The best advice I can give you is to face your fear, it worked for me. ;)

I have a fear of wasps

I ain't gonna try sticking my hand into one of their nests though.

Just take deep breaths and keep calm, remember that you're bigger than it and it's more scared of you.

My local pub had a family day a couple of weeks ago, tombola, raffle, face painting etc...

There was also an animal man who had various creepy crawlies. It wasn't until I saw a little seven year old lad hold the tarantula that I thought to myself, if he can do it, so can I.

So I did. 8)

I am an arachnophobic too and it affects me very badly but strangely, I don't get the same fear whne I see a tarantula - I think that furry coating makes it seem different. I am not saying I would be brave enough to hold one mind so well done 1979. :smt107

Ha ha, Big Bad Stokie is scared shitless of the hairy things. I don't like snakes in my sleeping bag, but I only fear waking up dead before I was supposed to finish whatever it was I was meant to do. I also fear running out of money.

Not an easy one, but like has been said before you have to face your fear really. Tarantula's are quite slow movers so I dont think they are a good one to use to deal with your phobia, if you are like me, its the fact that they can run away quickly and you dont know where the f*ck they are thats the problem

I was severely arachnophobic as a kid, wouldn't go in my bedroom if there was one there, would scream and jump about cos I thought it had gone up my leg etc!...My cure was knowing that I could pass the fear onto my children, I had to deal with it and find a strategy that worked for me.

Soooooooo............... When a big hairy black one jumped out onto the carpet in front of the kids, I would say "Oh it;s only George, he has come to find something to eat is all...........When the kids weren't looking I would hunt it out and give it a swipe (sorry George) 8)
Screwed up in a tissue in the bin is safe zone

I get to deal with all the spiders in our house nowadays...The kids are shit scared of em, and so is the cockneydj

I got called to deal with one by my youngest at bedtime, I got the f*cker by the leg and it ran off with seven intact...I lied to him and told him it had gone.....Some hourse later a seven legged spider appeared on his wall

Wonder how that happened

The only way to overcome any phobia is to experience the cause itself........

Think what is the worst thing a spider can do and test your prediction......
Its the basis of CBT......and alters your thought processes........

It is up there somewhere in Announcements or Help and Advice etc. You open a simple account like joining here and it shows you how to upload the photographs you want. When you want to post them elsewhere like on here, you just copy the URL from that hosting site and bingo. If I can do it, you certainly can and it only takes a half hour of playing around. You can't lose or destroy any pics from your computer so have a bash at it.

Cognitive behavioural therapy....

I suppose in brief it can be described as changing the thoughts which impact on our behaviour......
Our behaviour is not necessarily based on experiences but often on how we think or perceive things to be.....

Wolfman does not mention any traumatic incidents with spiders so his fear is irrational.....
I use CBT when working with agoraphobia, panic attacks, anxiety etc.....
Its a more 'practical' form of therapy......

im fine with spiders.

I picked a big one up a few days ago that was in the bath and threw him out the window.

Clowns - dont start me me. Im not scared of them but when I see one I get angry, red mist and everything. I can look at photos of them and im fine but when I see one in real life I want to jump on them and give them a good hiding.

I think "Hatred of clowns" is called clamophobia or something like that.

I wonder what it is about them that makes people flip?

Have you had a bad experience with clowns as a child do you think?

They annoy the f*cking life out of me, I could slap em cos they are so irritatingly stupid and expect folk to think their attempts at humour are funny

Honestly the only think I can think of was watching the film IT as a child and it scared the living shit out of me.

If I ever see one now I have to walk away quickly, I.E in town doing balloons and stuff for kiddies as I just get red mist.
Its really weird because im not scared of them at all, I can look at photos and even look at them on TV, its when there is one physically next to me I flip.

Snakes for me! I think it comes from my mother who cant even look at a picture of a snake, or even hold a TOY snake. I'm not quite as bad as her, pics don't bother me etc but Snakes are the only thing I really don't like. I'll watch any films. Scary films never bother me but I started to watch 'Snakes on a Plane' and had to switch off!

BEWARE: THE WORLD'S DEADLIEST SPIDER

The male Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is the world's most deadly spider.

Both the male and female Sydney Funnel-Web Spider carry atraxotoxin, the world's most dangerous toxin to humans as produced in the animal kingdom.

The male Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is six times more toxic than the female, and it is he whom is most often encountered by humans, during their intrepid search for a female to reproduce.

The Blue Mountains Funnel-Web and Northern Tree Funnel-Web Spiders are also highly venomous.

Area of distribution

The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is a ground dweller commonly found in areas of moist soils along much of the eastern coastal area of New South Wales, Victoria and in certain areas of South Australia.

The Blue Mountains Funnel-Web Spider is found mainly in the Blue Mountains area, as far west as Orange and Bathurst and occasionally in the Sydney basin.

The Northern Tree Funnel-Web Spider is found in south-eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales as far south as the Hunter Valley.

Danger time

The mature male funnel-web spider will wander around during hot humid nights, looking for a mate. Invariably after mating when he is totally exhausted the female bites him and sucks all the nourishment from his body leaving him an empty shell.

The male is highly aggressive when disturbed or cornered and is able to inflict multiple strikes, with its "flick-knife" hardened fangs.

You may also find funnel-web spiders wandering around the garden or in your home after heavy rain or nearby construction earthworks.

Seems you are safe out in Tassie Squeakster :D
