Best to find out how good batsman are before England enter into an Ashes series.

The WIindies bowled well. but not that well.

Not a wicket taken today by us, they were taking the piss big time. 628 to win, it will be all over by tea tomorrow. 200 at best.

2nd Test starts now in Antigua. Windies won the toss and have put England in on a pitch that Windies reckon has some moisture in it after some rain before hand. Denly making his debut as opener, Jennings dropped and Broad replaces Raschid. Let's see if we can stand up and be counted and not collapse meekly like last time out.

I thought with preparation England would improve.

Whats now obvious is many of these players are technically not good enough when opponents turn the screw.

I think with some of them it is as much about mentality as technical ability. None seem to have the patience to play the sort of innings Bravo played for the Windies. They are encouraged to attack to play their way out of trouble but on a pitch like that you have to dig in.

It's the real deal, even if it was Ireland this week rather than the Aussies. Woakes and Broad were different class yesterday - I can see some low scoring matches coming up in the Ashes.

Yes, it's a pity but it's the way things are now. At least the Aussies should generate a bit more interest.

So we were in a commanding position. Root decided not to open with potentially our fastest bowler, instead he let's them settle in before bringing him on to a flat wicket with an older ball. He leaves the field on the boundary and peppers the Kiwi's with short balls on a dead track, which they just leave alone.... All day.

By being skip, his own game is suffering and let's face it, he's not very good at it.

The fear is that these fixtures are more about money to be earned and fulfilling an obligation rather than national honour..

RIP Bob "Dylan" Willis.

Yes it does make some of us feel old.

Root has no lost 15 out of 36 tests.
The last 7 wickets went for 64?

Do you know what? I think we approached the games more professionally on the club tours we went on to Somerset/Gloucestershire in the 1970/80s than these so-called 'professionals'! When will we next see a non-rain-affected draw in a 5 day test? Not with this lot's attitude and approach!

Yes - we had a drink; we had a laugh; but we batted our guts out for the team (and yes - some of us didn't always feel too well next day in the July sunshine after a night on the beer.... Hinton Charterhouse CC on Royal Wedding Day comes to mind...)

Oh summer days at New Road watching Graeme Hick or Grace Road watching David Gower.

With the odd shandy to pass the time.

Pity I missed Viv Richards in Taunton.

My old, beloved, Hong Kong Cricket Club was an associate to both MCC's. The test greats of yesteryear all passed through our hallowed halls, or welcomed the likes of me in London or Melbourne. Most were hard drinking men, but they had the basics of the game ingrained from birth, so even when the chips were down and they had a hangover, muscle memory would kick-in. Not now. Perhaps vegan butty lunches and soya shakes are not the way forward. The lads who sank gallons of ale were better players.

So before lunch, we have them on the ropes. With doubt in the Yarpie's minds, and our tails up. A ball from Jimmy has gone between 3/4 slip, all going well.

Out from lunch, the period where the batsmen need to settle and try to erase that doubt, a period where we need to keep the foot on their neck. What do we do? Take Jimmy off and go back to two slips and a gully, giving the batsmen the respite they so desperately need, to bed themselves in and make a score.

Just don't get it.

Yes, even with the inevitable mid-order collapse, we're in this.
