Does Britain stand on the brink of greatness today..

A Tour de France win, a British winner of the Open, and an ashes test win??

With the previous Tour winner being British, plus in golf we have the US open winner, and in tennis we have the current holder of both the US and Wimbledon titles.
And add to that a Lions tour win, is this as good as its ever been?

If only our sporting prowess was a barometer of our political and economic standing in the world.

If only these sporting achievements had been made in Britain. Thats the sadness, we they have to go to grow.

I do enjoy the sporting success Cannock. But what fun is there for an old man if he can't be a bit of a grumpy old sod?

Still sinking in that Murray won Wimbledon, thats just beyond comprehension, now back to back Tour de France winners.. incredible.

Its defo stuff you never thought you'd see.

if someone told me we'd have back to back winners of the tour de france you'd think they were barmy. more chance of a football world cup win.

and the wimbledon win was similar. a couple of years ago I would have said andy was capable but its still a big win.

When the talent pool from England dries up completely the FA might just try nationalization, a few Brazilians to gain qualification.

Thats when the fans will demand real change within all structure of English football, but not until.

...and the Duke of Edinburgh is Greek, but he's good for fuck all.

Mind you, who would ever have thought that the mighty Aussies would be fast-tracking the citizenship for a Pakistani, so he can become the next Shane Warne?

Back a positive note..I cant believe we also have an Olympic 5000m and 10000m double gold medallist, and that Mo can run the 1500m faster than Coe, Ovett, and Cram ever did.

Sir Bradley was born in Belgium to an Australian father. You have to feel a little sorry for Mr Froome, he will never score celeb points, like Wiggins and Cavendish ( mod knight and page 3 missus ) but I think his win was more notable. Wiggins was the first though and that can never be taken away.
Britain had better enjoy it's cycling pre-eminence while it lasts, Kenyan kids who will not make the the grade at distance running are being farmed off into cycling programmes, I predict a black African winner before 2020, and then complete dominance. That could be Froome's real legacy, his win was probably celebrated more in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda etc than it was here.

I prefer Fritz.

Is that the Moscow Olympics? I remember those halcyon days of Athletics, as a youth. Sport seemed much greater then.

Earned his place alongside Emil Zatopek and Lasse Viren for sure. Remarkable composure and courage under pressure.

Pretty sure he was British before and would remain so if less successful. We need to stop bemoaning people who do well for Britain and embrace them for gods sake. I wasn't born in this country but I'm still as British as everyone else and I still would be if I lived in another country.
