Murray just lost the first set to Djokovic in the semis of the French Open.

I made the point to my friend that Murray is unlucky to have been competing with three of the greatest players in history at their peak, in Federer (2003-2009), Nadal (2008-2010) and Djokovic (2011-now).

But friend thinks that challenging these greats has elevated Murray to a higher level that he would have reached otherwise?

So, is it better that Murray was able to challenge players who will go onto become legends of the game and doing bloody well to reach 8 finals and win 2 of them, or would he have been better off playing without these, and in all likelihood probably would have won 10+ Grand Slam tournaments?

Murray is a warrior and one of the most impressive sportsman I've ever seen. His mental approach suggests to me that he'd have reached this level of ability regardless of his opponents.

Fairly certain I'll get knocked down for this, but I'd put Murray as one of the finest sportsmen (or women) Britain has ever produced. No shame in not being as good as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, and for him to spoken about in the same breath as those three is something that should be admired

Murray knockers have already been made to look very silly when they called him a bottler, so no one is getting knocked for praising him now.

When Djokovic puts his foot on your windpipe its goodnight Vienna, with Murray there is a safety valve.

Djokovic is the best there is at the moment, and Murray pushed him and pushes him, harder than anyone..Murray seems to be back at the level he needs to be to win big again.

I Know this is a Murray thread but still...

Congrats to Snan Wawrinka, what a win!

it does also show that trying to win a final having just beaten 2 of the top 4 is a big ask.

Very tough for Novak to beat Nadal and then Murray. I thought Novak maybe took his eye off the ball slightly against Murray, having knocked out Nadal (and can Nadal's record at the French Open be beaten by any sports star in history?), and then perhaps did it slightly against Wawrinka.

Full kudos to Wawrinka though, to win 2 Slams in this era is very impressive

I thought Murray was absolutely brilliant against Federer, one of the great matches at a fantastic level.

Both players come out of that match with so much credit such was the standard.

Marvelous, bloody marvelous.

Lost a bet to my wife on sport last night, she asked me how old Martina Hingis was, I said 35, she said " No she's younger than that".
I lost, washing up for me.

Its good to see the old stars in the crowd as well, from Rocket Rod to Bjorn Borg, now there's two absolute masters that were always a pleasure to watch.
Giants of the game springs to mind.

Watching Serena I can't help but worry about the lax drug testing regime in tennis.

Novak Djokovic is the only player that can take Roger Federer out of his comfort zone and place him under pressure.
I doubt Roger beats Novak in a slam ever again.

Murray has been excellent this weekend. Huge performance that set, looked dead and buried and absolutely knackered. Superb stuff

Winning mentality.

Tactically Murray could be Britain's best ever sportsman.

The Murrays were brilliant in the Davis Cup today, spent far more attention on that than I did the Wolves match today.

Would be an amazing achievement if we can win a rubber tomorrow and get through to the final

Awesome from Murray again today - despatched Tomic with ease.

Can't believe GB have reached the Davis Cup final, really hope Argentina can pull of a shock and beat Belgium.

Murray has been brilliant in it all year - 6 singles wins and 2 doubles wins. We've only won one rubber all year that Murray hasn't played in. Think it's taken a lot out of him this year, especially when it's come to the slams. Really hope winning the Davis Cup will make up for it

Not about Wimbledon but...

If Andy beats Nadal today he will end the year as the world number 2

Wish he wasn't playing.

He should have his feet up and be preparing for the Davis Cup Final

Andy Murray is one game away from winning the Davis Cup for Britain. What an achievement that is, he so under-appreciated. I hope this will shut up the whiners who don't like/support him because he's Scottish.

He will go down as one of the great British athletes

World champions in team tennis

I grew up never knowing an heavy weight champion, a British tour de france winner, and a winning Davis cup team..

Murray is a great British sportsman

Presumably, never knowing a male British Grand Slam winner either?

Its a good job Scotland didn't vote for independence when they cast their vote last year.

Only 10 men have reached all 4 grand slam finals since the start of the grand slam era in 1968.
Murray is one of that 10, what a legend.

For the first time in years I call this final 50/50 Murray is at that level which elevates greats above superstars.
The longer it goes the better his chances.

Murray played well yesterday, but as the commentator said, how do you beat a player with no weaknesses?

for me the silly point lost at the net when Murray nearly broke serve in the 3rd was a turning point, it seemed to take a lot out of Murray.

it shows how close it actually was though in the 4th set when Djokovic was serving for the Championship and as he took his foot off the gas slightly, Murray broke his serve and then held serve.

It was a bit to little to late though as it was a long way back from there.

i still believe that had Djokovic had to beat Wawrinka then Murray would have been in a better position.

French open on the clay is a war of attrition, very tough tournament.
