Hats off to them for pulling off an impossible victory at the death, although the deflection off the bat of Ben Stokes for four extra runs when trying to make his ground was a cruel and decisive way for the Kiwis to lose out for an outright win. I called them bottlers and said they would not make the knockout stage, they proved me totally wrong, so I eat humble pie. They developed as a team at the right moment after the three losses in the group stage, better late than never. This was probably cricket's most exciting finish, ever. The real winner was cricket itself.

That was proper 'name on the trophy' stuff.
The Kiwi's must be gutted. But England gave themselves a chance from a very difficult situation and rode their substantial slice of luck to victory.

A wonderful moment for English cricket..History made.

A tough job, favourites on home soil, and a poor final pitch..job done.

WINNERS

The Kiwis didn't lose that, they made England win it. Totally and utterly magnificent.

One of the best sporting displays I have seen in my lifetime. Couple that with Liverpool and Tottenhams semi final week and they make a great advert for English sport.

The humility of the players from both sides shown after the game, a lesson to us all how on how to be magnanimous in victory or defeat.

But interestingly it seems the on-field umpires made an incorrect call in giving Stokes 6 runs. Apparently the Law says that you only get 2 runs (plus the 4 overthrows) if the batsmen had crossed 'before the throw is made...' which then hots the player or his equipment. When the NZ fielder threw the ball, the players had not yet crossed, so it should have been 5 runs. And NZ would have won!

In a further display of 'good sportsmanship', the NZ players today simply said the umpire was doing his job, and it was all water under the bridge....

Can you imagine OUR MEDIA doing the same? There would be questions in Parliament, and confiscation of the NZ passports at the very least....

You're right, SW, but why did the NZ team / captain not realise that at the time and protest? Also, the umpire has to ensure that the batsman at his end correctly puts his bat on the ground on completion of the first run and then also try and spot a fielder's throw towards one set of stumps at the same time as checking if the two batsmen had crossed before any subsequent incident, almost impossible to master. It should have been a five and a NZ win, however no VAR to spot that so thank God we won it, despite whatever..!!!..

I must have been one of the few who was more interested in the tennis.

The Ashes though, far to late in the summer.

A). You maverick, you...…:-)

B). Agreed but the World Cup of Cricket pushed the Ashes dates back.
