Britain, despite the everyday accounts of atrocity and utter despair, KEEP OUT of the dispute.

Entering into the dispute will only relegate us from our comfortable, mid table place in the World League, to a hotly disputed relegation battle in the Arab League.

Leave it be.

What about Isreal/Palestine? Seems everyone has an opinion on that!

How is Billy Hague going to persuade Syrian stakeholders, Russia, to 'have a word' with Mr Assad? Presumably the Chinkies don't give a monkey's.

I can't see a military intervention in Syria. Would only provide more grist to the mill for islamic extremists. Why can't oil rich nations with military might, such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia intervene ? Probably because they would react in the same way as the Assad regime if they faced that level of opposition. Come to think of it so would Russia and China.

Obama wants nothing to do with it, but, the republicans are really gonna use that against him right now.. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.. But I don't think it's Britains war.. The US will take the lead and involve the Turks and Saudi Arabia, or it's more likely that they will continue to do nothing and leave the butt with Russia.

You can stretch urselves too thin sometimes. We have problems, serious problems, everywhere. We cant fix everything no matter how bad it is. And while the real big boys, china and russia, back Assard he is protected for countries like england and the UN.

We cant afford it, sounds cruel but its the truth.

Agreed, and Syria has always been in the French theatre of influence. But let's see what the world will do as more children are executed and shown to the world...............

I do not agree with military intervention, but something must be done. Plenty of meaningless statements from the UN have had no affect. Russia are the only ones who can do anything about the atrocities being carried out, but it appears that they are not prepared to intervene, so in the end the USA will probably have to step in, with little old us hanging on to their coat tails. Not good at all.

no other intervention works, if we block aid tht only hurts the poor, if we go to war tht kills the poor. if we close financial funds the powers in charge use money tht should go to the poor instead. We r just about to leave iraq n Afganistan only to walk into another war.

Bin Laden may be dead but he's laughing in hell right now as what he always wanted, the west paralysed by decade long wars tht financially bankrupt us, has happened.

FORBES.
Why then, have the Russians continued to support Assad and to stymie Western efforts at intervention?
Two primary reasons. The first is that the Russians are (justifiably!) horrified at the prospect of an Islamist-run Syria. It is hardly a secret that the Syrian opposition is totally overrun with Islamists of varying degrees of nastiness, and it seems obvious that they are the prime military muscle in the “Free Syrian Army.” Since Russia’s restive North Caucasus is itself beset with an Islamist insurgency that threatens to spiral totally out of control, the Kremlin’s concerns hardly seem irrational, ill-founded, or crazy. A Muslim-brotherhood-run Syria would almost certainly provide support to the insurgents battling Russian forces in Dagestan and Chechnya, and would greatly destabilize an already unstable area.

Secondly, Russia’s actions are designed to showcase its reliability as an ally

Was listening to a russian political expert on radio speaking about why russia were blocking the UN. He said russia have excellent intelligence, probably the best in the world, and they know exactly, or have a very good approximation, as to what type of govenment would get into power once Assad is thrown out.

he said the difference between the west and the east superpowers is, because of P.R, the West HAS to look as tho they r shocked and fighting for the syrian people no matter who takes over in the future, even tho behind the seens there are serious fears in the west of an extreame 'iran type' islamist controlled syria post assad, where as the eastern super powers can openly say this without fear of a backlash frm there own media/public.

So what do we do? Is it Assad's men committing these murders, is it extreamist islamists trying to make it look as tho its the syrian army? Do we go in knowing we could be creating another iran or stand back and watch children die or save them knowing millions could die in next decade under the wrong govenment?

With each atrocity the need for intervention becomes ever more important. One big concern though is that the opposition forces are far from united. There are different groups, and it appears that old wounds are being re-opened. Basically, I am asking whether the Syrian government are totally to blame, or are there other murderous groups settling old scores.

the russian people aren't happy with putin mind, but he'll bully them into line.
Both sides are now apparently shooting innocents, mainly ones not on their side.
Poor old Kofi, unlike Lennon, in this situation he is clearly 'the only one'.
Both sides bleat about the other's atrocity - and carry on.

When Syria implodes into civil war, who will be there to help the innocents. Has nothing been learnt from the genocide in Bosnia?

The problem is Iraq has made any sort of military invasion so toxic it won't happen. Russia are also putting a cockblock any any sort of air support like we gave to Libya. So theres no choice but to sit back and wait till either Assad is over run (seems unlikely given his military might). Russia stop using Syria as a pawn against their eternal game against the US (more likely but still a long shot) or Assad crushes most of the rebels and most people just give up and accept his bollocks (most likely it seems?).

I've never seen any group of animals carry out these acts, other than the human race of course.

Not strictly true. Primates and some monkeys will separate into warring tribes and kill the same species, including the young, with impunity. There are numerous other examples I could give.
Of course, sadism is a trait that is only displayed by us "higher" life forms.

There does come a time when war becomes a morale issue. Not just the horror of joining in or declaring one on another nation of fellow humans, but the morale issues around not declaring one when people do this sort of thing to women and children with seeming impunity ..........

The Syrians have now shot down a Turkish fighter jet. This will make relations between the two countries even more strained.

Syria seem to be spoiling for a fightoutside of their country. Could it be to deflect from the atrocities taking place inside Syria?
