In today's game Jimmy Greaves would be unaffordable to buy, what a supreme, delicate finisher he was. Elegant, skipped over the pitch as if he was wearing carpet slippers. I was privileged to have seen him live a few times. Maradona I have never forgiven after his handball "goal" against us back in 86. Cheats should not prosper. Great player to watch at times though.

I am afraid 'cheats' is not black and white... Boly's goal against Man City was 'cheating', what about the two penalties against Cardiff a couple of years ago? We 'cheated' and they missed the penalties...

Every foul is a 'cheat' - ie breaking the rules, as is every unpunished shirt tug - or uttered profanity.

Much as I hated it at the time, Maradona was just doing what nearly all professionals do - and to be honest, many many amateurs too - win at all costs.

Perhaps we could have a debate about the Corinthian spirit? Or once again eulogise that William Ambrose Wright played over 100 times for England as a centre half, and hundred more for WWFC and was never once booked. Different days. Different ethics.

But not all is bad. Remember the Leeds v Chelsea cup final replay? A pro referee (Peter Walton) once told me that after reviewing the recordings, the feeling amongst today's refs that no more than 7 IN TOTAL would have remained on the field today - 15 sent off (and for individual incidents, not a mass brawl!)

The thuggery has largely been replaced by the nasty, cynical 'professional' foul. (Don't you just HATE the bastardisation of the word 'professional'? It should mean 'high standards', 'qualified' and 'ethical'?)

I still haven't forgiven Bomber Brown though. :twisted:

I think people tend to rail against perceived injustice when a player gets away with something significant. I wasn't too bothered about the Cardiff thing because I thought they had cheated us out of a result at Molineux with their play. It's the way you see 'em.

Anyway, it was our very own Stan Cullis who didn't bring Albert Stubbins down before a goal which cost us the league because he didn't want to be known as a cheat.

With the Boly "goal" I felt that was accidental hand ball so I wouldn't regard it as cheating. However, I do think it was one of the main factors leading to the change in the rule for this season and it has cost us several times so we have been paid back.
